RANAGANATHAN STREET

     RANAGANATHAN STREET

Ranaganathan Street is one of the busiest streets and the shopping hub of Chennai. The entire street is lined up by multi-stored shopping centers and street vendors alike who sell articles worth fee rupees to few lakhs. Famous shops like Saravana Stores, Jeyachandran textiles and Ratna stores huge presence in the street .the most famous among these establishments on Raganathan Street are the saravana stores. Presently known, as Ranganathan Street ought to have been Rangaswamy Iyengar Street after the first resident of that street. It was the usual practice then to name streets after the first resident irrespective of their class, caste or contribution. Mr.Tupil Rangaswamy Iyengar, a retired Civil Servant of the erstwhile Madras Presidency built his house in early '20s. When civil authorities approached him for his formal approval the humble, religious and self effusive gentleman requested it be named after

The street never falls silent, not even in the dead of night. When the electric trains call it a day.

I took this image to show the crowd in Ranganathan Street. I have taken it in a top angle to show the entire market and the crowd. This is one of the busiest Street markets in Chennai.

The Raganathan street witnesses for a fathers love towards his child .The father take keen interest to show his child for the rush in the market. The child watches it so interestingly and would feel like standing on the top of the world.

A boy in Raganathan Street is playing with a piece of wood from a construction site. The piece of wood contains nails on his edges, which may harm the child even though people walk on the side, nobody try to stop him from playing with it, Because people are not concerned for others, but only for themselves.

A person selling small toys in Raganathan street market near a waste bucket. When asked why he did so, he answered if we are looking for all comforts, they wont be able to sell their products in the market. He is ready to suffer the difficulties in the unclean, unhealthy surroundings, In order to join both ends of life.

This gives a positive feeling. A vegetable seller in Raganathan Street, spraying water on to her daughter’s face that gives refreshes to her. In the same way, all water sprayed which refreshes the vegetables too.

The earth is getting hotter day by day. This makes the people drink water often the boys back to home from school. He is having water even while crossing the railways. This shows the hot climate in Chennai.

The fruit sellers wait for customer with eager eyes. In the afternoon, the shops are opened and the fruits are set so that it may attract people. It was Thursday because of which,

They wouldn’t earn much compared to weekends.

The fresh peanuts are getting great demand in Raganathan Street market.
People are reluctant to buy peanuts containing sand particles.
So, sellers are removing to make it clean and increase their sales.

The owner of ration shop scolds his labour due to less stock that he brought. It would make a decrease in the profit that he would get on that day.

Raganathan Street also has a wholesale shop for pumpkins. We can see many people in a hurry to make their sales. More than 300 kilograms of pumpkins is being sold here everyday.

She is selling flowers in roadside like jaadhi, malli, arali, jawandi etc… Her life revolves around fragrant flowers and leaves. Once she finished everything she used to go home. On rainy days she make no money, on a good she make enough to eat.

People are least considered in following the road rules. It also create accidents, people even park vehicles in parking restricted areas. This shows the negative of both the government as well as the public. The laws need to be enforced more strictly.

The slum children will enjoy site in the town. They walk from each textile shop to another textile shop for looking at all the things that are beyond their reach. They usually get dresses that are used by others.
But still they are happy.

Biryanis provided in small shops are so cheap.
Just incase you will wonder me to inform you that there are more shops selling biryani also in Raganathan street. Street foods come in handy for all walks of life.

Juice stalls in Raganathan Street feels happy in summer season. It’s time where more people demand juice due to the unbearable heat. Unless other shops, the juice shops have sales according to the climatic conditions.

It is so exiting to know what this photo captured in Raganathan Street says, are they fighting or having a friendly chat? This is a small fight between two auto drivers. When the camera was zoomed on them, they saw me suddenly and they changed their expression and started laughing. They thought that it was from a media person. And the fight would come in Tv’s, and Newspapers… Because they are afraid of medias.

The prices of food items in town areas are so high, that people who less finds it difficult to afford. They will carry food from their houses or anywhere and having it. Sitting different places in town like in front of shops, footpath etc.

The college students are showing a helping hand to the people in the area. They are conducting programs to make aware about road safety.
